The Application

Can I apply in more than one area? For example in writing and music?
Yes. The Young Artist Award recognizes artists and is not limited to to an individual artistic area. Your application, including your presentation and your portfolio, should demonstrate your artistic achievements.

Is there a monetary award?
Yes. The Young Artist Award is accompanied by a monetary award of $100.

Who can write a letter of reference?
Anyone may write a letter of reference. The letter should mention the relationship between the artist and the person writing the reference.

How many letters of reference do I need?
You need at least one letter of reference.  You may submit up to 3.

How do I apply?
Go to our application page (now open!). You will fill out a brief form and submit a presentation that tells or shows us what the arts mean to you. You will also submit an online portfolio of your work.

The Presentation

What should my presentation be like?
Your goal is to tell/show us who you are and what the arts mean to you. (You will show us the work you do in your portfolio.)  You can’t fit your whole development as an artist into a short presentation, so pick what is most meaningful to you. Celebrate your accomplishments, don’t be shy!

What format should I use in my presentation?
You can write about your achievements (in any format) or make a different kind of presentation. We encourage creativity! You could make a video of yourself talking about your art, create a new work of art, make a slide show, write a poem…

You will submit your presentation online, via video links, photographs and documents. To ensure that we can view your presentation please use Youtube links to submit any videos. You should include a Youtube video of any slide shows/multimedia presentations so that they can be viewed as you intended.

Please limit your presentation to 2 pages of writing, 3 minutes of video, and/or 10 images. Your portfolio is submitted separately.

This presentation could take a long time to make. I am really busy! What can I do?
We suggest that you spend no more than 4 hours creating your presentation. We hope this is a rewarding activity! You will also spend time getting references, completing the online information form, and assembling your online portfolio.

The Portfolio

What should my portfolio be like?
You may include documents, photos and video links. Show us what you do as an artist.  If you are applying in more than one category (for example in dance and drama) then be sure to submit work that supports this.

I am a performer and don’t have a portfolio. What can I put in my portfolio?
You can consider an artistic resume that lists your significant artistic experiences and skills, but you are also in a great position to submit video demonstrating your performance.

Do I have to create new work to put in my portfolio?
No. We expect that your portfolio will not be new work. You may include work from school projects, performances and links you have previously posted online. Your portfolio may include new work but that is entirely optional.

How much should be in my portfolio?
We want to get an idea of your skills and achievement as an artist. We do not need your entire life’s work. Please provide excerpts of your work showing the best of what you have done. We suggest the following:

  • Written work: no more than 15 pages
  • Video: no more than 10 minutes
  • Images: no more than 25 images

You can submit any or all of the above. Remember that a smaller submission of your best work is better than a larger, less carefully-selected one. Remember Pascal: “I would have written a shorter letter, but I did not have the time.” Take the time to create a portfolio that best represents your work.

What is the difference between the presentation and the portfolio?
The presentation tells us who you are and what the arts mean to you.

The portfolio shows us what you do as an artist.

How do you select successful candidates for the Young Artist Awards?
We assess your application as follows:
